הבדלים תרבותיים

השבוע קיבלתי לביתי מדריך לסטודנטים בינלאומיים חדשים של האוניברסיטה שאני עומד ללמוד בה.

מלבד היתקלות בניסיונות נואשים משהו להסביר את המבטא האוסטרלי בכתב (ניסיון מבדר בפני עצמו), שקוראים מדריך שכזה, אתה לומד כמה האוניברסיטה מגוונת מבחינת המרכיב האנושי וכמה היא רגישה פוליטית וחברתית, לפעמים יותר מידי. בעיקר בלטה העובדה שהמדריך מדגיש כמה וכמה פעמים את העצמאות של נשים באוסטרליה, את העובדה שהן זכאיות לדעה משלהן ושיש להן לפעמים קריירה (מזעזע!!!).

בכל מקרה, מה שבאמת הפיל אותי, זה הקטע הזה:

It is not unusual, at the end of the date, for your companion to invite into his or her place for coffee. The invitation does not imply that you are being invited to have sex with your companion. You are not obliged to accept the invitation and you may decline.

Elaine: Maybe coffee was coffee.
George: Coffee's coffee in the morning, it's not coffee at twelve o clock at night.
Elaine: Well some people drink coffee that late.
George: Yeah, people who work at NORAD, who're on twenty-four hour missile
