After the immense success of the first ever DELPHI talks, the AGSM Class of 2010 hosted the 2ed AGSM DELPHI Talks event which was used to mark the official opening of Diversity week and just like the first one this was a big success as well. Continuing the trend from the first edition we were exposed to the varied backgrounds, experiences and interests of our diverse cohort. Yuping Xin gave us a very authentic ― Introduction to Chinese Tea and Tea Culture" and showed us where actual Chinese Tea is grown. Chris Conway took us through an international journey in three countries explaining "How Sports and Games Have Changed Our World". Jonathan Blackwell gave a very short glimpse to the intriguing and thought provoking world of Crop Circles in his talk about "The Mystery of Crop Circles". Carla Betalleluz and Alfonso Juregui exposed us to their home country "Peru: Geography, History, Traditions, Food and more". Finally, P de B talked about her amazing experience as a westerner in a third world African country "Chad: a country nobody cares about but where everybody goes".
For me personally, the AGSM DELPHI Talks embody the idea of the MBA. During our course the subjects of diversity, cultural differences and culture shock are mentioned many times. We all know that they exist. But I don't think we actually discuss them. In his book "Outliers" Malcolm Gladwell discusses the importance of acknowledging the human race's diversity. In a fascinating chapter, titled: "The Ethnic Theory of Plane Crashes", Gladwell explains: "Who we are cannot be separated from where we’re from – and when we ignore that fact, planes crash.” I believe that we are here, to get an international education. A big part of this education is learning about other people cultures. I hope that the AGSM DELPHI Talks events will help prevent plane crashes, real or figurative.
Not a while ago I read a post in the Harvard Business Review Blog, titled: "Three Ways to Make Conferences Better". The third point was called: "Conferences should be about more than just eating and sitting", and the writer explained: "Every meeting or conference should use the power of the group to give something back to the community in which the meeting is held". I am confident that the AGSM DELPHI Talks lives up to this high standard. For me, this event is a gateway to create a better AGSM community, to make the AGSM MBA experience extraordinary and to create something that all of us will remember for a long time. And I wish, that by creating a better AGSM community, we will create, step by step, a better world. I will finish with the two requests I had from the class in the two events: Don't let your dreams be dreams and ask questions for the sake of asking questions.
See you at AGSM DELPHI Talks III.
